FAQs on state inspections in Massachusetts
What vehicles need to be inspected?
All vehicles that are registered in Massachusetts need to be inspected every year.
What happens when I bring my vehicle for inspection?
- First, a state-licensed inspector will perform a brief visual inspection to ensure there are no gasoline leakages. Gasoline leakages must be fixed before the inspection proceeds as the leakages present an immediate danger to the inspector and the general public.
- Second, you present your vehicle registration to the inspector. A vehicle must have an active registration and matching valid vehicle ID number that is found in the left front side of the dashboard for an inspection.
- Third, you pay the inspector $35 after the validation of your registration. You are then asked to exit the vehicle and remain in the waiting area, while the inspector performs the safety and emissions tests.
